Your horse riding apparel should consist of a new pair of blue jeans, a T-shirt and some nice white tennis shoes.

Of course, I'm just joking. The horse riding apparel industry is making a lot of money off of our passion for horses. I think there is a lot of cool stuff out there to spend your money on. But, there are some things that really bug me about this apparel thing.

First, have you ever had to wear a full wool competition outfit in the middle of the summer? I have and let me tell you, it's not fun. And I think some changes need to be made here. But, I digress, because what I do want to talk about here is not what I dislike but the apparel that I really really like.

Riding Boots

Everyone involved with horses needs a pair of boots. Even if you don't ride, you need to protect yourself while working in the barn or on the property. The more things your are involved with, the more pairs of boots you may need. Showing will involve yet another need since you won't score many points if you show up to a hunter/jumper competition wearing paddock boots.

Helmets

If you want to ride safely, a riding helmet is a must. In my opinion, safety wins out in every situation. That means this isn't a fashion show ladies and gentlemen. You need to protect your self or that pretty head will get banged up!

Breeches

Breeches are just a fancy name for riding pants. However, they are an important part of show competition because tradition and the sanctioning organization) dictates that horse riding apparel be of a certain color and style.
